Brynje Arctic Double is one of the most effective base layer systems I've used for cold-weather activities. The combination of mesh against the skin and an insulating outer layer provides excellent moisture management and warmth, especially when alternating between hard physical work and periods of inactivity. Available with either wool or polyamide mesh. I've used both and honestly notice very little difference in real-world performance. Not the prettiest underwear out there, but that's hardly the point.
